Pygmy Elephant Operations and Services

Overview of self-guided services, risk management, and insurance requirements.

Description of Operations

Pygmy Elephant is a specialty tour operator focused on self-guided long-distance hiking itineraries in Europe and other international destinations. Unlike traditional guided tour operators, we do not employ or subcontract guides to accompany clients on the trail. Instead, we provide comprehensive trip planning, logistical support, and risk management resources so clients can safely complete treks on their own.

Our services include:

  • Customized Itineraries & Handbooks: Clients receive detailed day-by-day route notes, maps, GPS tracks, transportation guides, and shelter/hotel information. The Tour du Mont Blanc Handbook (attached as an example) outlines route descriptions, alternative trails, trail safety, emergency contacts, and transportation contingencies.
  • Client Support: We provide 24/7 telephone and WhatsApp support for urgent matters, and email support during business hours.
  • Accommodation & Luggage Transfers: We arrange accommodations and, when requested, baggage transfers between stops. We work only with vetted accommodation partners and transport providers.
  • Risk Management & Safety Information: Clients are required to review and sign a liability waiver and booking terms before travel. These documents disclose risks inherent to mountain trekking and require acknowledgment of personal responsibility. We also provide a dedicated “Hiking Risks” document and include emergency response protocols within our client portal.
  • Travel Insurance Requirement: All clients are required to obtain travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation; while we do not verify policies, this requirement is built into our terms and conditions.

Risk Management Practices

  • Clients are instructed to plan daily hikes carefully, check weather forecasts, and turn back if conditions are unsafe.
  • We provide emergency contact numbers and instructions for distress signaling, including helicopter signaling procedures.
  • Clients are advised on safe practices for storms, snowfields, rockfall, and exposure risks.
  • Internal weekly operations meetings review trail conditions, incident reports (tracked in HubSpot), and client feedback.
  • We maintain a written Emergency Response Plan that outlines procedures for coordinating support if clients encounter difficulties.

Key Differentiator

Pygmy Elephant operates solely as a logistics and planning provider, not a field guide or outfitter. Clients hike independently, using the tools and resources provided, and assume responsibility for their on-trail decisions. This substantially reduces the direct liability exposure typical of guided adventure companies.
